Structure and Remit of the Governing Body

The role of the governing body is strategic. The Department for Education’s Governance Handbook identifies three core functions for governing bodies:

  • ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff;
  • overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

Members of the governing body are appointed based on their skills in order to contribute to effective governance and the success of the school.

The governing body structure is as follows:

1 Headteacher; 2 Parent Governors; 1 Local Authority Governor; 1 Staff Governor; 7 Co-opted Governors

Total of 12 Governors

Committees of the Governing Body:

Chair of Governors - Tim Wheeler

Finance and Resources - Chair of Committee – Tim Wheeler

Ella Hughes - Headteacher      Term of office: 20/04/20 -
I am a member of the Full Governing Body and the Pay Committee.
I am Headteacher at Chapel Street Community Primary School. I am an Associate Consultant and Coach for One Education Ltd. Through this role I provide coaching, support and consultancy to other schools and those working in education around school improvement and leadership development. Chapel Street Community Primary School is paid directly, by One Education Ltd, for my time in this role. Currently, I have no other financial or business related involvement with the School.
I co-run a Book Club with Simply Books (an Independent Bookshop in Bramhall). This is a book club for adults who enjoy reading children's literature (up to and including books for young adults) and we meet roughly once every 6 weeks. The book club was started in January 2020. I am friends with the Director of The Curiosity Project and have had a therapeutic relationship in the past with the Director of Child in Mind Ltd. I don't benefit financially from any of the above organisations.
I completed a Biology degree and Primary PGCE at the University of Durham before starting teaching in 2006. I have over 15 years’ experience as a teacher, 11 of which I have been a senior leader. I was appointed as Headteacher at Chapel Street in April 2020, prior to which I was Acting Headteacher and had been Deputy Headteacher since September 2017. Throughout my career I have worked in a number of very different schools across Greater Manchester and in New Zealand. I completed my NPQH in 2014 and in 2019 was accredited as an ILM Level 5 coach.
