Remote Learning

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

Our remote learning provision is for:

  • All children in a class bubble that have to isolate at home because of a positive Covid test for a child or staff member in the class bubble
  • Any individual child who has to isolate because of contact with someone from outside school who has tested positive, although the child is not ill
  • Any child who is shielding, but is not ill
  • Any child who is in the UK, quarantining after a return from out of the country

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

In the first day the children will be sent home with paper based learning to complete independently. The children will be asked to check Class Dojo, as further information will be sent out by the end of the first day.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, if additional resources are required we would adapt the activity to ensure all children working remotely could access the lesson.

The work in all subjects will be the same in content but may be delivered in a different way. This is to ensure that we are mirroring the provision and education for all children at Chapel Street- both in school and remotely.

Remote learning will follow the following:

  • There will be a timetable for the lessons
  • Lessons will be posted onto ClassDojo
  • Children’s questions, responses and work will be sent back through Class Dojo
  • A staff member will be available to help them during the lesson time
  • Staff will give feedback on work through Class Dojo

Remote Teaching and Study Time Each Day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

EYFS - We expect the children to engage in short age appropriate activities and to watch videos sent by teaching staff.

Key Stage 1 - Minimum expectation as outlined by the Department for Education - 3 hours per day

Key Stage 2 - Minimum expectation as outlined by the Department for Education - 4 hours per day

Accessing Remote Education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

  • Class Dojo is our chosen platform for home – school learning and commnication between the teaching staff and parents.
  • Each parent has been invited to join their child’s class. If you do not have access to Class Dojo, please see your child’s class or contact the school office – 2241269.
  • Work will also be provided daily on Class Dojo; this will help with understanding the tasks set in the remote learning pack.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

  • All children will be provided with a paper pack which includes work books and activities which link with the activities taught in school. These packs also provide children with the stationary they will need to complete the learning.
  • We have a bank of laptops which can be utilised for those who need them and who are working remotely. If a class are asked to work remotely, laptops can be provided for the children to take home. If your child is struggling to access remote learning whilst at home, please contact your child’s class teacher through Class Dojo or call the school office on 0161 224 1269.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

  • At Chapel Street Community Primary School, we will be delivering a core blended curriculum which will include paper based activities and online support through Class Dojo.
  • Work will be provided daily on Class Dojo. This will help with understanding the tasks set in the remote learning pack. These will include videos and explanations on how to complete the tasks. The videos will be provided from Oak Academy Trust and White Rose Maths Hub which follow age appropriate learning.
  • Due to accessibility issues for many of our families, we currently have no plan to move to online live lessons. Where needed, our staff will record videos that the children can access to support their learning- these may be for a whole cohort to access or for a child/group of children to access support or further challenge. These videos can be accessed at different times and re watched if needed.

Engagement and Feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

We are very aware that when children are working remotely, there are often other factors to consider for example, parents working at home, younger siblings and multiple siblings working in the same space.

During this time, we ask the following:

  • Parents/carers to support by setting good routines – sticking to normal bed times and wake up times.
  • Parents to provide their child with a space to work and access to a device (this can be arranged through school)
  • To log on to Class Dojo daily and to engage in activities – both online and paper based.
  • To contact the school, either through Class Dojo or by ringing the school office, if you need any help or need further clarification.
  • For children to do the very best they can to engage in remote learning and to ask for help if they need it.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

It is important that all children engage in remote learning. Regular learning whilst working at home will ensure that your child returns to school able to continue with their learning at the same pace as their peers.

When using Portfolios on Class Dojo, we will have a clear way to track which children are completing the activities we are setting.

If we find that a child is not engaging with their work, we will:

  • Send regular reminders to the class and individuals.
  • Share good work on Class Dojo in order to raise the profile of working remotely and celebrate children’s achievements.
  • Contact the parents to complete a check in, and to support with any problems that may have arisen.

If there are families that are struggling due to lack of devices, internet issues or other problems additional support can be put in to place.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

  • Completed work must be sent via portfolios on Class Dojo for your child to receive feedback.
  • Work will be marked daily and your child will receive feedback for each English, Maths and Science/Topic task completed.
  • We aim to mark feedback within the timetabled time for that subject; however, there may be times when the marking and feedback happens later in the day.
  • If there is time available, feedback on additional work on portfolios should be given.
  • To celebrate excellent work and effort, there will be posts on the class story to share examples of the hard work the children have been doing.

If there are children working only using the paper packs, they will be contacted separately in order to arrange feedback and support.

Additional Support for Pupils with Particular Needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • Work for children with identified SEND will be adapted and personalised.
  • If child is supported by a 1:1 in school, where possible they will be available on line to offer additional support and guidance to ensure the child’s needs are met. The 1:1 will also make regular phone calls home to check in.
  • Work packs will be age appropriate for all year groups’
